New to therapy

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session (It's Not What You Think)

If you've never been to therapy, the first session can feel like the scariest part. Most people imagine one of two things: lying on a couch while a stranger silently takes notes, or being asked to spill their deepest wounds to someone they met four minutes ago.

Neither one is what actually happens.

It's a conversation, not an interrogation

A first session with me looks a lot like a good conversation with someone who is fully paying attention. My job in that hour isn't to analyze you — it's to help you feel comfortable, understand what brought you in, and start mapping what you'd like to be different.

You set the pace. If there are things you're not ready to talk about, we don't talk about them. There is nothing you're supposed to know, no "right" way to do therapy, and no test to pass. "I don't know where to start" is one of the most common first sentences I hear — and it's a perfectly good one.

What we'll actually cover

Most first sessions touch on a few simple things: what's going on in your life right now, what you've already tried, what a better season would look like for you, and any questions you have about how I work. If you're using insurance, we'll have already sorted the logistics before you arrive, so the hour is actually yours.

By the end, you'll know two things: whether you felt comfortable with me, and what working together would look like. That's it. You're not committing to a year of therapy by showing up once.

The fit matters more than anything

Decades of research say the relationship between you and your therapist predicts your results better than any specific technique. That's why I offer a free 15-minute phone consult before you ever book a session — so you can get a feel for me at zero cost and zero risk. And if I'm not the right fit, I'll say so, and point you toward someone who is.

The hardest part is already behind you

If you've read this far, you've already done the hardest thing: you've admitted something needs to change. The rest — the phone call, the first session, the work — happens one small step at a time, and you don't do any of it alone.

Ready to take that step?
